Carmen Giant Bamboo Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & RATIONALE

  • KPC's giant bamboo plantation project is a comprehensive initiative designed to address socio-economic and environmental challenges in Mindanao, Philippines. Through this, we aim to complement the government's environmental recovery and climate change initiatives while generating local employment opportunities. By promoting agricultural diversification and sustainable land use, KPC also revolutionizes industrial agriculture in the country, elevating it to greater heights. Furthermore, as bamboo is known for its high carbon sequestration capabilities, one of our goals is to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere that cause global warming and various atmospheric phenomena by generating high integrity carbon credits that will help offset current emissions.

STRATEGIC AGENDA

  • Promote a sustainable way of cultivating giant bamboo in the Philippines that will help combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere
  • Protect IPs' ancestral lands
  • Provide a sustainable and steady source of livelihood for IP communities in Mindanao that will help address rural poverty and will provide the new generation of IPs better opportunities in life
  • Foster rural development, food security, as well as lessen the possibility of local insurgencies or armed conflicts through employment generation
  • Foster collaboration between the private and public sector to further develop the Philippine bamboo industry

TARGET OUTCOME

  • Reforest and protect about one million hectares of ancestral land in Mindanao
  • Be an active contributor in the global carbon removal efforts
  • Provide economic opportunities to several other tribes or IP communities in Mindanao and combat local insurgencies
  • Generate verified and high integrity carbon credits from the bamboo plantation
  • Be able to harvest the first batch of giant bamboo by 2030

Kawayanihan 2024 Guinness World Record Attempt

PROJECT TYPE

  • Guinness World Record (GWR) Attempt for "Most People Planting Bamboo Simultaneously"

PROJECT LOCATION

  • Brgy. Poblacion, Carmen, Province of Cotabato
  • Including other areas in Visayas and Mindanao

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & RATIONALE

  • KPC's participation in this DOST and Bukidnon Congressional district Bamboo Planting lead event is part of the company's commitment to promote growth of the local bamboo industry and foster sustainable development. 

PARTICIPATION

  • KPC provided supply of seedlings and logistical support for the GWR planting in Carmen, Province of Cotabato.
  • Technical support and facilitation of even in Carmen was provided by KPC.
  • The coordination of participating group during the event

  • ACHIEVED: GUINNESS WORLD RECORD (GWR) ATTEMPT FOR "MOST PEOPLE PLANTING BAMBOO SIMULTANEOUSLY"
